Sydney Protest Restrictions Get Lifted After Two Months

(MENAFN) Authorities in Australia have removed extraordinary measures limiting protests in New South Wales, ending nearly two months of heightened controls on public gatherings, according to reports.

Mal Lanyon said Tuesday that the special powers, originally granted following the Dec. 14 mass shooting at a Jewish festival on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left 15 dead and dozens injured, were no longer necessary. These powers had allowed police to restrict or block protests in certain areas of the city.

"I'm satisfied the conditions that led to the extension last time do not exist now, and I'm more than happy for (police) to work with protesters," Lanyon said.

The emergency restrictions had first been imposed on Christmas Eve. Their removal comes shortly after clashes erupted nationwide during protests against the visit of Isaac Herzog to Australia, where thousands took to the streets and confrontations with police occurred.

Civil liberties groups and protest organizers have since filed a constitutional challenge in the NSW Court of Appeal, aiming to prevent similar emergency powers from being used in response to future terror threats.
