Australian PM publicly apologizes for recent Bondi Beach shooting

(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday publicly apologized for the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach and outlined plans for broad reforms aimed at preventing similar attacks.

Speaking at a news conference at Parliament House in Canberra, Albanese said: "I feel the weight of responsibility for an atrocity that happened whilst I'm prime minister. And I'm sorry," according to an official transcript. He emphasized that his government would work daily to safeguard Australian citizens.

The prime minister introduced a series of proposed legislative measures designed to strengthen protections against hate crimes and extremist activity. These proposals include creating an aggravated offense for hate preaching that advocates violence against protected groups, increasing penalties for hate speech and property destruction, and potentially granting authorities powers to cancel visas for individuals engaging in hate speech, displaying hate symbols, or associating with terrorist or prohibited groups.

Additional measures under consideration include amending the Customs Act to prohibit extremist materials and hate symbols. Albanese also noted ongoing coordination with state and territory officials to implement changes to gun laws.

In response to the December 14 mass shooting, Albanese announced that federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies will undergo a review, with findings expected to be published in April.

The attack, in which a man and his son opened fire on Bondi Beach in Sydney, resulted in 15 deaths and 42 injuries and has been described by police as a "terrorist attack."
