Australia Slaps Sanctions on Two Russian Cybercrime Networks

(MENAFN) Australia slapped sanctions on two Russian cybercrime service operators Thursday, accusing them of facilitating ransomware assaults against Australian and global digital infrastructure.

In a coordinated statement with Defense Minister Richard Marles and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed Canberra executed the move in coordination with the US and the UK.

"Working across government and with international partners, we will continue to take action against Russia, to disrupt cybercrime and hold malicious cyber actors to account," Wong said.

Australia zeroed in on Media Land LLC and its affiliated entity ML Cloud, alongside two senior executives—Aleksandr Alexandrovich Volosovik and Kirill Andreevich Zatolokin.

"These organizations have provided their ransomware infrastructure to malicious cyber actors and cybercriminals, allowing them to conduct cyberattacks in Australia and around the world," it said in the statement.

The punitive measures criminalize supplying assets to, or conducting transactions with, the designated entities and persons, carrying penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment and significant monetary fines. The two named individuals face additional entry bans into Australia.
