Crocodile-Infested River Gets Approved for Brisbane Olympics

(MENAFN) Olympic organizers have given the green light to the Fitzroy River, located in Queensland, Australia, as the official venue for rowing and canoeing competitions during the 2032 Games in Brisbane, despite concerns about its crocodile population, according to reports from local media outlets.

Situated approximately 600km north of Brisbane, the river was designated as an Olympic venue in March, but it has faced criticism from both national and international bodies, which argued that the river did not meet certain technical standards.

In addition to being home to saltwater crocodiles, the Fitzroy River is also known for its strong currents and tides.

On Tuesday, Queensland state legislator Matt Canavan reassured the public, confirming that the river had successfully passed initial assessments conducted by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA).

"We now have a green light for rowing in 2032. All the data is in, and there are no longer any barriers to holding rowing events here," Canavan stated.

The official went on to emphasize that recent data showed the waterway was "flat as a tack," downplaying the safety concerns related to the crocodiles and tides.

"I mean, if Jesus Christ ever came back to this world, it’s a great place for him, because it’s flat enough to walk on," he remarked.

Despite its reputation as a natural habitat for saltwater crocodiles, with some reports indicating sightings of four-meter-long specimens near a local golf club within the Olympic competition area, the Fitzroy River has been used for rowing by local schools, clubs, and even elite athletes.
