Australia EV Sales Hit Record High in 2025
The national industry body revealed that 72,758 battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were purchased between January and June, marking a 24.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The report also noted a sharp rise in EV market penetration, with these vehicles now representing 12.1% of all new car sales, up from 9.61% in 2024. EVs hit a high point in June 2025, reaching nearly 16% market share. However, despite this momentum, EVs still make up just 2% of all cars currently on Australian roads.
As of September 2025, more than 410,000 EVs are part of the national fleet, according to the EVC.
Charging infrastructure is also expanding rapidly. The report recorded 1,272 fast-charging locations nationwide and at least 4,192 high-power public charging plugs available by June 2025—year-on-year increases of 20% and 22%, respectively.
Still, the council warns Australia is not on track to meet climate goals. To stay aligned with emissions targets, the report says Australia must scale up to 1 million EVs on roads by 2028, requiring at least 145,000 EVs sold in 2025, another 240,000 in 2026, and 320,000 in 2027.
“Transport will become Australia's largest-emitting sector within years,” said EVC Chief Executive Officer Julie Delvecchio.
The report calls for stronger, coordinated government action, urging measures such as GST exemptions, energy bill credits, and clear EV targets, including a ban on new petrol and diesel vehicle sales.
