Indigenous Australian senator highlights racism against Aboriginal children

(MENAFN) An Indigenous Australian senator has called attention to continued racism faced by Aboriginal children during the country’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, observed on Monday.

"Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day and I want to celebrate the strength, pride and Truth-Telling of our Young People as they lead the way to Blak justice," stated independent senator Lidia Thorpe in a series of social media posts.

This year’s theme, Little Footsteps, Big Futures, aims to spotlight the determination and strength shown by Indigenous youth as they follow the legacy of their ancestors.

"But we can’t celebrate our kids without naming their resistance - against a state that still wages genocide," she added.

The day comes against the backdrop of a long and painful history for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, beginning with British colonization in 1788. These communities have endured the erosion of their cultural practices, displacement from ancestral lands, and systematic injustices including the removal of children from their families and denial of basic rights.

It’s estimated that around 50,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families between 1910 and the 1970s, in what is now widely recognized as a deeply traumatic period in Australian history.
