Historic Flooding Traps Almost 50,000 in NSW, Australia
On Wednesday afternoon, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) reported that over 48,800 people and 23,200 homes are stranded due to floodwaters in the area, located more than 200 km northeast of Sydney.
The region has faced four consecutive days of intense rainfall, resulting in unprecedented and record-setting flooding.
The SES has issued 109 flood warnings, enforced evacuations, and set up evacuation centers to support those affected.
By late Wednesday afternoon, the SES revealed that over 400 flood rescue operations had been carried out, with both helicopters and boats being used to assist those in danger.
In addition, the Australian Defense Force (ADF) has been deployed to assist with air evacuations.
SES Chief Superintendent Dallas Burnes told a news agency that rescue efforts would continue through the night, though he stressed the high risks involved, calling the operations "incredibly dangerous."
On Wednesday morning, the Manning River in the Mid North Coast surpassed its 1929 record flood level, signaling the severity of the event.
Natural Hazards Research Australia noted that the record flood along the river is an extremely rare event, estimated to occur only once every 500 years.
